University of Namibia (UNAM), the largest university in the country, is a multi-campus, public research university in Namibia.
The University of Namibia (UNAM) emerged with the country of Namibia and symbolized the hopes and aspirations of a new, independent Namibia. Founded in 1992, two years after the liberation of Namibia from South Africa, the creation of the University of Namibia was more than the establishment of an educational institution; it represented the construction of a national identity. The new, public university brought together several educational institutions, including the preceding University of South West Africa and a few training colleges, and was mandated to educate and serve the people of Namibia. While young, the University of Namibia has a past which reaches back further. Its origins can be traced back to the various educational enterprises established during colonialism and in resistance movements. German colonial schools were the first seeds; South African Bantu education followed, and independent schools were established by indigenous peoples and liberation movements. The UNAM as an institution has embraced this complex history by building on the knowledge concerned to it, while simultaneously developing into a center for critical education, inclusive education, and relevant education. As a result, the University of Namibia is a vibrant, diverse, resilient, and a flourishing educational institution. It is the country's flagship university and is a meaningful contributor to research, economic development and social progress.
