Hebrew University of Jerusalem stands as Israel's top public research university which maintains its position among the best universities in the world. The university operates from three primary campuses in Jerusalem which include Mount Scopus for humanities and social sciences and the Edmond J. Safra campus in Givat Ram which serves the exact sciences and the Ein Karem campus which specializes in medical sciences. The university first began its operations in the late 19th century when people proposed the establishment of a Jewish university in the Land of Israel during 1884. The university faced multiple geopolitical changes during the next hundred years which resulted in the temporary suspension of Mount Scopus operations in 1948 and subsequent campus expansion until the campuses unified again in 1967.
