Al-Manar University of Tripoli

City University of Tripoli, historically recognized and widely known as Al-Manar University of Tripoli is one of the leading private, non-profit institutions of higher education in Tripoli, the capital city of the North Governorate of Lebanon. The university occupies a large and beautiful campus located in the Abou Samra district and boasts a green design with numerous green areas for an environment that promotes learning. Now that it has been accredited by the Lebanese Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Al-Manar University follows an American-style credit-hour system of education and uses English as its main language of instruction.

The university originated from a visionary educational idea by the former Lebanese Premier Rashid Karami and educator Muhieddine Makkouk in 1958 to create an intellectual backbone for the northern area. In 1966 the two partners established Al-Manar Society, as a charitable institution to obtain land and support for the envisioned higher education institution. Subsequently, Rashid Karami passed away and his brother, Omar Karami became the head of the Society and orchestrated the creation of the first Board of Trustees of the university. He received the official authorization of the institution under the Presidential Decree #720 dated November 15, 1990. The campus received continual growth both physically and academically in the following years and received another pivotal development around 2017 when it was officially renamed to City University under Presidential Decree #1908.
