University of Tromsø – The Arctic University of Norway is a state university in Norway and the world's northernmost university.

The history of the University of Tromsø can be traced back to the early 1900s, when there was a growing movement for higher education in Northern Norway. In 1920, the Tromsø Museum was established, which offered some university-level courses. In the 1950s and 1960s, there was a growing demand for more higher education opportunities in Northern Norway, and in 1968, the Norwegian Parliament passed a resolution to establish a university in Tromsø.

The University of Tromsø opened its doors in 1972, with an initial enrollment of about 1,000 students. The university grew rapidly in its early years, and by the 1980s, it had become the largest university in Northern Norway.

UiT has played a major role in the development of Northern Norway. The university has helped to attract and retain talented people in the region, and has contributed to the economic and social development of Northern Norway. UiT is also a leading center for Arctic research, and its work has helped to raise awareness of the Arctic and its importance to the world.

In 2013, UiT merged with Finnmark University College to form the University of Tromsø – The Arctic University of Norway. This merger created a larger and more powerful university, which is now one of the leading universities in Norway.
