National Polytechnic University of Armenia

National Polytechnic University of Armenia which serves as the main public technical institution in Armenia operates as the principal center for engineering and technological research in the Caucasus region. The university which operates its main campus from Yerevan capital city of Armenia runs a large urban campus that combines historical architectural elements with contemporary scientific facilities. The university operates three branch campuses located in Gyumri and Vanadzor and Kapan which enable students across the country to access technical education. The institution was officially established on March 1, 1933, when the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute was created through the merger of Construction and Chemical Technology Institutes that existed at that time. The Soviet Union referred to the institute as the Karl Marx Polytechnic Institute during its period of rapid growth which turned it into one of the largest engineering institutions in the Soviet Union. The State Engineering University of Armenia operated under that name until 2014 when it became the National Polytechnic University of Armenia after Armenia gained its independence in 1991. The university developed its architectural landscape through multiple renovations which started with its first Alexander Tamanyan designed building and progressed to a complete contemporary facility that shows how educational systems in the country have evolved.
