Edith Cowan University

Edith Cowan University is a modern and progressive educational institution which serves as the primary educational institution for the metropolitan area of Perth and the South West region of Western Australia. The university which was established in 1991 became the first Australian university to bear the name of a woman. The institution demonstrates student-centered educational practices which lead to high teaching ratings and positive student outcomes. ECU maintains a diverse international student body which creates an active community dedicated to developing equitable educational practices and serving its surrounding communities.

The Claremont Teachers College established in 1902 marks the beginning of ECU which became a university only after recent years in 1991. The Western Australian College of Advanced Education (WACAE) was created in 1981 through the unification of multiple teacher training colleges which had been established throughout the 20th century. The institution received its official name Edith Cowan University in 1991 to honor the memory of Edith Dircksey Cowan who had served as the university's first president. Cowan became the first woman to hold an elected position in the Australian Parliament and dedicated her life to educational and social justice advocacy work which now serves as the foundation of university values.
