Belarusian State University

Belarusian State University (BSU) is a public university located in Minsk, Belarus. It is the oldest and largest university in Belarus.

The history of Belarusian State University (BSU) dates back to 1919, when the Central Executive Committee of the Belorussian SSR resolved to establish the first national university in Belarus. The university was officially opened on October 30, 1921, with three faculties: Workers, Medicine, and Humanities.

In the early years, BSU faced a number of challenges, including a shortage of qualified faculty and resources. However, the university quickly grew and developed, and by 1930, it consisted of six faculties: Workers, Medicine, Pedagogical, National Economy, Law and Soviet Development, and Chemical Technology.

BSU was severely disrupted by World War II. In 1941, the university was evacuated to Saratov, Russia, where it remained until 1944. After the war, BSU returned to Minsk and began to rebuild.

In the postwar years, BSU experienced rapid growth. New faculties and departments were established, and the university's enrollment increased significantly. By the 1970s, BSU was one of the largest universities in the Soviet Union.

After Belarus gained independence in 1991, BSU was officially recognized as the leading higher education institution in the new country. The university continued to grow and develop, and today it is one of the top universities in the world.

BSU has played a major role in the development of education and research in Belarus. The university has produced many notable alumni, including scientists, politicians, and artists. BSU is also a leading research university, and its scientists are involved in a variety of projects in fields such as physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, and engineering.

Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2024, Belarusian State University is positioned as the #387 top university in the world, which makes it the #1 top university in Belarus.
