Sofia University

Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski (Bulgarian: Софийски университет "Св. Климент Охридски") is a public research university in Sofia, Bulgaria. It is the oldest institution of higher education in Bulgaria.

The history of Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski dates back to the second half of the 9th century, when public teaching activities began in Bulgaria. After the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule in 1878, there was a strong demand for higher education. In 1888, the Higher Pedagogical Course was established in Sofia. This institution was renamed the Higher School in 1889 and Sofia University in 1904.

Sofia University began with four regular lecturers and three additional lecturers, and 49 students. The university initially offered programs in pedagogy, literature, history, and mathematics.

Sofia University has played an important role in the development of Bulgarian education and culture. The university has produced many notable alumni, including writers, poets, politicians, and scientists. Sofia University is also a leading center for research and innovation in Bulgaria.
