University of National and World Economy

University of National and World Economy in Sofia, Bulgaria stands as the oldest and most respected economic higher education institution in Southeastern Europe. The university which people describe as "Bulgarian Harvard" because of its exceptional graduates and top national rankings functions as the main center for scholarly research in economics and management and social science fields. The institution was founded in 1920 as the Free University of Political and Economic Sciences by a group of prominent professors and public figures, including its first Rector, Professor Stefan Bobchev. The university has experienced multiple structural changes throughout its more than 100 years of operation which included a time when it functioned as the Karl Marx Higher Economic Institute during the communist period. The university regained its independence and adopted its current name in 1990 after Bulgaria experienced its democratic transition. The university has educated multiple national leaders who served as Prime Ministers and Presidents of the National Assembly and high-level officials who worked for international organizations including the International Monetary Fund Managing Director.
