Qingdao University

Qingdao University is a key provincial research university located in Qingdao, Shandong, China.

The roots of this esteemed university run deeper than its official 1985 founding. Its story begins in 1909 with the establishment of a specialized higher learning institute, laying the groundwork for future academic endeavors. This early institution underwent several transformations, eventually becoming the Qingdao Medical Specialized School in 1946. A significant turning point occurred in 1946 when the National Shandong University merged with the Qingdao Medical Specialized School, forming the Medical School. This school later gained independence in 1956, solidifying its identity as the Qingdao Medical School. Meanwhile, in 1950, another crucial piece of the puzzle emerged with the establishment of the Qingdao Textile Technical School. This institution evolved through various name changes, eventually becoming the Shandong Textile Engineering Institute in 1978.

The year 1958 marked a period of restructuring. Shandong University relocated to Ji'nan, creating an opportunity for the Qingdao University we know today to take shape. However, its official establishment wouldn't happen until 1985. This period saw the university forming with the ambitious goal of becoming a "high level distinctive university," encompassing a broad range of disciplines in arts, science, engineering, and business. The true transformation arrived in 1993. Recognizing the potential for synergy and a wider intellectual reach, the university merged with three established institutions: the former Qingdao University, the Qingdao Medical College, and the Shandong Textile Engineering College. This monumental union, which also included the Qingdao Normal College, brought together a wealth of knowledge and experience across various fields.
