Shanghai University of Finance and Economics

Shanghai University of Finance and Economics is a prestigious public university in China, focusing on finance and economics.

In 1917, a seed was sown in the fertile ground of Chinese academia. A commerce program emerged within the walls of the Nanjing Higher Normal School, marking the humble beginnings of a future giant. Just four years later, in 1921, this program blossomed into a standalone institution – the Shanghai College of Commerce. This college became a pioneer in the field of commercial education in Mainland China. Notably, the early faculty boasted a strong international influence, with many holding PhDs from prestigious universities abroad. This global perspective, instilled from the very beginning, continues to be a defining characteristic of the university.

The 20th century witnessed the institution navigate a changing landscape, reflected in its evolving names. In 1932, it became the National Shanghai College of Commerce, signifying its status as the first fully independent commerce university in mainland China. The political climate of the 1950s saw it transformed into the Shanghai College of Finance and Economics, solidifying its focus on both finance and economic disciplines. By then, it had become the sole institution of higher learning dedicated to finance in East China. Finally, in 1985, the university adopted its current name – Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE).

Campus life at this university is vibrant and enriching. Students come from across China and the world, fostering a diverse and dynamic community. The university provides a wealth of opportunities for extracurricular activities, from academic clubs and sports teams to cultural organizations and volunteer initiatives. Shanghai, a bustling metropolis, offers a wealth of cultural experiences and professional opportunities right on the doorstep. The university's motto is evident in its mission: to cultivate outstanding talents in finance and economics. It aspires to equip students with not only practical knowledge and versatility but also a broad global outlook and a strong national spirit. The aim is to foster graduates who are creative, decisive, and possess exceptional organizational skills.  Looking forward, the university is committed to serving society and contributing to national and local development. It envisions itself as a leader in shaping the future of finance and economics, both within China and on the global stage.
