Southwest Minzu University, formerly known as Southwest University for Nationalities (SWUN), is a multi-disciplinary higher education institute under the control of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission of China.

The seeds of this prestigious university were sown in 1950, a time of great change for China. Recognizing the need to empower the nation's ethnic minorities through education, the institution, initially known as the Southwest University for Nationalities, emerged as a beacon of opportunity. Its founding marked a pivotal moment, opening doors for students from diverse ethnic backgrounds to pursue higher education and contribute to the country's development.

The early years were dedicated to establishing a strong foundation. The curriculum focused on providing a well-rounded education, encompassing humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. This ensured that graduates possessed not only the knowledge specific to their chosen fields but also a broader understanding of the world. As the university matured, it expanded its offerings to include professional programs in engineering, agriculture, medicine, and management, catering to the evolving needs of China's workforce.

In 2003, the university underwent a significant transformation, changing its name to reflect its continued commitment to national unity and the celebration of China's rich cultural tapestry.
