Tibet University

Tibet University is a regional public university in Lhasa, Tibet, China. It is the largest university in the Tibet Autonomous Region.

The roots of this prominent Lhasa university stretch back to 1951, where its story begins with informal classes established by Tibetan cadres. These classes aimed to educate and prepare Tibetans for new roles in their society.  Over the next decade, the institution underwent several transformations. In 1956, it became the Tibet Local Cadre School, and in 1961, evolved into the Tibetan Administrative Cadre School. This period focused on developing a capable workforce for the region.

A significant shift occurred in 1965 with the establishment of the Tibetan Teacher Training School. This marked a new chapter, prioritizing education for the broader Tibetan population. The school enrolled hundreds of students from farming and herding backgrounds, paving the way for a more educated citizenry. The 1980s witnessed a period of rapid growth. The Department of Tibetan Language was merged with the Teacher Training School in 1982, solidifying its commitment to preserving Tibetan culture. Finally, in 1983, with the official approval of the Chinese government, the university we know today was born. Established in 1985 as one of China's aid projects for Tibet, it marked a significant milestone in the region's educational development.
