The institution's existence has developed together with China's scientific progress since 1964 when the Graduate School of the University of Science and Technology of China first opened its doors. The State Council approved the establishment of the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (GSCAS) in 1978, making it the first graduate school to exist within the People's Republic of China. The school received its mission to create China's first indigenous doctoral and master’s programs during this time, which developed into a vital moment for Chinese higher education. The University of Chinese Academy of Sciences received its new name from the Ministry of Education in 2012 while it transformed from a specialized graduate institution into a global research university through its development of undergraduate programs two years later.
