National University

National University of Costa Rica which people commonly refer to as UNA stands among the topmost public universities which Central America maintains as its most prestigious educational institution. The university, which operates from its headquarters in Heredia city located north of San José capital, serves as an essential component of Costa Rica's educational and social infrastructure. The university exists according to its "Universidad Necesaria" (Necessary University) philosophy which demonstrates its dedication to social justice and making education accessible to underprivileged communities and enabling sustainable development for Costa Rican society. The university operates through multiple regional campuses and dedicated research facilities which form an extensive network that connects scientific research activities with community service work and environmental protection efforts.

The university opened on March 14 1973 as a contemporary educational institution which succeeded the historic Normal School of Costa Rica and the Superior Normal School to maintain a long tradition of teacher training and educational excellence. The first president of the institution, Benjamin Nunez Vargas, took charge of its establishment by developing an educational system which would serve the needs of developing countries. The university named its main campus after Omar Dengo to honor a Costa Rican educator who represents the intellectual heritage of the country. The university has developed into an international research institution which conducts research in volcanology and seismology and ecological preservation since its foundation as a regional college.
