Eastern Mediterranean University
Eastern Mediterranean University is a prominent public research institution in Famagusta, Northern Cyprus that has gained international recognition due to its multicultural atmosphere. Over 100 nations are represented at EMU, thus creating a global hub of higher education. As a regional leader in the Eastern Mediterranean, EMU has achieved international accreditations and is consistently ranked among the world's universities due to its commitment to academic excellence. The university was inaugurated in 1979 as "Institute of High Technology" to support the local workforce through engineering and technical training. Since then it has expanded considerably in both mission and scope. As a result of an agreement between the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Turkey, EMU became the state university of Northern Cyprus in 1985. In 1986 the university officially opened its doors and has continued growing from a specialized technical school to a full-service university with new faculties and research centers established to reflect student and industry needs.
Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2026, Eastern Mediterranean University is positioned as the #691 top university in the world, which makes it the #3 top university in Cyprus.
