The Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador (PUCE) is a private university founded in 1946 in Quito, Ecuador. It was the first private university in the country and was established by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). The university's founding was inspired by the vision of Father Aurelio Espinosa Pólit, SJ, who believed that Ecuador needed a university that would provide a high-quality education based on Christian values.
PUCE began with a single faculty, law, but quickly expanded to include other disciplines, such as economics, engineering, and the arts and sciences. The university also established a number of research centers and institutes.
In 1963, PUCE was granted the title of Pontifical Catholic University by Pope John XXIII. This title is given to universities that have a special relationship with the Catholic Church.
PUCE has played a significant role in Ecuadorian intellectual life. The university's faculty and students have made important contributions to a wide range of fields, including law, medicine, engineering, the arts, and the humanities.
PUCE is also a major research institution. The university's research centers and institutes conduct cutting-edge research in a variety of fields, including climate change, biodiversity, and sustainable development.
PUCE is committed to social justice and has a strong tradition of community engagement. The university's social impact programs work to address a variety of social challenges, such as poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation.
