The American University in Cairo

The American University in Cairo (AUC) is a private, independent, non-profit university in Cairo, Egypt. It is the oldest American university outside of the United States and is one of the most prestigious universities in the Middle East.

The American University in Cairo (AUC) was founded in 1919 by the American Mission in Egypt, a Protestant mission sponsored by the United Presbyterian Church of North America. The university's founding president, Charles A. Watson, envisioned AUC as a bridge between the East and the West, offering a liberal arts education in the English language to students from all over the Middle East.

AUC's first classes were held in Khairy Pasha Palace, a historic building in the heart of Cairo. The university quickly grew and expanded, and in 1938 it moved to its current campus in New Cairo.
