Tampere University

Tampere University serves as a public research institution that achieves excellence through its numerous academic disciplines and its advanced research capabilities from its location in the vibrant city of Tampere, which exists among multiple lakes. The university operates under the motto "Human Potential Unlimited" which establishes its distinct educational approach that combines technological studies with health sciences and social science disciplines. The university's facilities extend throughout three different campuses which include the City Centre campus that hosts social sciences and humanities activities and the Hervanta campus which functions as a technological center that promotes engineering development and the Kauppi campus which partners with the university hospital to support medical research and life science studies. The university ranks among top sustainable institutions because its green roof system serves as Finland's biggest biodiversity hub while the university commits to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.

The current institutional framework exists because the University of Tampere and the Tampere University of Technology fused on January 1 2019 through a historic merger. The institution began its operations in 1925 when Civic College opened in Helsinki to offer journalism and public administration programs. The college relocated to Tampere in 1960 to assist the city with its decentralization projects and in 1966 the institution received its new name University of Tampere. The establishment of Tampere University of Technology in 1965 emerged as a response to the industrial requirements specific to the "Manchester of the North" region. The two organizations functioned together for multiple decades which enabled them to work together on biotechnology and computer science projects until they established their current status as a complete educational institution.
