University of Oulu

University of Oulu is one of the largest and most multidisciplinary universities in Finland, located in the city of Oulu. The institution started its operations on July 8, 1958 to fulfill its mission of developing people from Northern Finland. The institution developed into an international research university which achieves top 3% university status throughout the world. The university uses its Latin motto Universitas Uloensis to show its main connection to the region while its present strategic direction is expressed through the phrase "Science with Arctic Attitude."

The university operates across two primary campus environments that cater to its diverse academic and research interests. The main campus of the university functions from Linnanmaa Campus, which is situated 5 kilometers north of the city center. The campus features an extensive system which includes six faculties and university library Pegasus and special spaces like the Botanical Gardens. The Kontinkangas Campus, situated 2 kilometers southeast of the city center, is a specialized medical and life sciences hub. The facility connects to Oulu University Hospital which operates as the primary academic location for Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine, thus supporting research activities and clinical work.

Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2026, University of Oulu is positioned as the #342 top university in the world, which makes it the #3 top university in Finland. The university's global rank is improved by 2 points from last year.
