The University of Georgia

The University of Georgia (UGA) is a public land-grant research university with its main campus in Athens, Georgia.

Born in the cradle of revolution: The University of Georgia, then known as Franklin College, emerged in 1785, just nine years after the birth of the United States. It holds the distinction of being the first public university chartered by a state government, paving the way for the American public higher education system we know today. Despite its early establishment, it wasn't until 1801 that classes commenced on a permanent campus in Athens, Georgia.

The university's early years were marked by gradual growth, with its first graduating class in 1804 consisting of only four students. However, the 19th century saw significant expansion, fueled by land grants and a growing demand for educated professionals. UGA became a land-grant institution in 1872, solidifying its commitment to serving the agricultural needs of the state.

The 20th century brought challenges and triumphs. UGA weathered the storms of segregation and civil rights struggles, ultimately emerging as a more inclusive and diverse institution. It also witnessed remarkable academic advancements, becoming a major research center and establishing esteemed programs in journalism, law, veterinary medicine, and business.

Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2024, The University of Georgia is positioned as the #514 top university in the world, which makes it the #4 top university in Georgia.
