The university began in 2001 as the College of Information Technology and Management Systems. The College of Information Technology and Management Systems was founded in Kumasi, Ghana, mainly to provide credible education in the area of information technology and management. Originally, the university aimed to deliver practical and relevant training and education to meet the labor requirements of a fast-growing technological society. The establishment of the university was in direct response to the social need for IT and management professionals in the region. In 2004, the college transitioned to university status and was renamed Garden City University College.
This change marked an important point in its history as a degree-granting institution, giving it the opportunity to broaden its services in some academic areas while maintaining its focus on quality education. This development increased the profile of the institution as one of the leading higher education institutions in the region.
