The Education University of Hong Kong

The Education University of Hong Kong operates as a publicly funded tertiary institution. The university campus occupies 12.5 hectares in Tai Po district where it provides a peaceful modern space that supports academic study and research activities. The university functions as one of eight government-funded institutions which the University Grants Committee oversees to serve as the main driver of educational advancements throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The organization aims to develop educators who show compassion and social responsibility as they work to create sustainable change throughout the world. 

The institution developed its present structure from its 1994 founding while its educational history originates from 1853 when St. Paul's College introduced its first teacher training program. The current university structure emerged from the 1994 merger which combined five existing teacher training institutions: Northcote College, Grantham College, Sir Robert Black College, Hong Kong Technical Teachers' College and Institute of Language in Education. The organization which started as The Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) spent ten years developing its academic and research capabilities. The Chief Executive in Council granted university status to the institution in May 2016 which also led to its name change to The Education University of Hong Kong as recognition for its professional development work in the region.

Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2026, The Education University of Hong Kong is positioned as the #530 top university in the world, which makes it the #7 top university in Hong Kong.
