HKUST opened its doors for the first time to students in 1991. The idea for the school was the brainchild of the Governor of Hong Kong at the time, Sir Edward Youde, and Dr. Hon Sze-Yuen Chung. These men realized that Hong Kong urgently needed a school to propel it toward an economy that was knowledge-based. The school has seen a great deal of success in its short life.

Based on the QS World University Ranking of 2023, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is positioned as the #40 top university in the world, which makes it the #3 top university in Hong Kong. The university's global rank decreased by 6 points from last year.
