The University of Hong Kong in Hong Kong is abbreviated as HKU (香港大學 in Chinese). They have more than 23,000 students who major in medicine, biological sciences, political sciences and humanities. They were successful in identifying the agent that causes outbreaks of the dreaded SARS virus.
Established in 1912, HKU is the oldest educational institution in the country. It emphasized scientific fields, rather than the humanities. The Japanese invaded Hong Kong in 1941 and damaged some of the buildings on campus. The school would not re-open until 1945.
