Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) is a public medical university located in Tehran, Iran. It is the largest and most highly ranked medical university in Iran, and is consistently ranked among the top medical universities in the world.
The history of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) can be traced back to the early 19th century, when the first modern center of medical training in Iran was founded in 1851 as part of the Institute of Higher Education (Dar-ol-Fonoon). The Dar-ol-Fonoon School of Medicine was established with the help of European experts, and it offered a modern curriculum in medicine and surgery. The first group of graduates from the Dar-ol-Fonoon School of Medicine started practicing medicine in 1856.
In 1934, the School of Medicine was established as a part of the newly founded University of Tehran. The School of Medicine was the first medical school in Iran to offer a six-year medical program, and it quickly became the leading medical school in the country.
In 1986, all of the medical schools and colleges at the University of Tehran were merged to form TUMS. TUMS became an independent university under the new Ministry of Health, Treatment, and Medical Education.
