Dublin City University is a young and dynamic institution that has rapidly ascended to become one of the world's leading "young" universities. The university operates three academic campuses in North Dublin which include Glasnevin and St. Patrick's and All Hallows and it serves a student base which includes individuals from more than 120 different countries. Dublin City University which Ireland refers to as its "University of Enterprise" achieves international recognition because it concentrates on creating social and cultural and economic advantages. The university provides modern research facilities and student environments through its Helix performing arts center and its newly opened Polaris STEM building.

The university started its existence in 1975 when it was founded as the National Institute for Higher Education (NIHE) in Dublin. The university opened its doors to students in 1980 with a goal to develop a workforce that would excel in science and technology and communications fields. The institution received university status in 1989 which led to its rebranding as Dublin City University. The university experienced a significant development in 2016 when it completed its major incorporation process which brought St. Patrick's College and Mater Dei Institute of Education and Church of Ireland College of Education into the university system. The university expanded its heritage through this development which combined traditional teacher education methods with DCU's contemporary educational approach.

Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2026, Dublin City University is positioned as the #410 top university in the world, which makes it the #6 top university in Ireland. The university's global rank is improved by 11 points from last year.
