University College Cork

University College Cork forms part of the National University of Ireland scheme and is host to the colosseum of Cork City itself. The university offers a vital cultural and intellectual center to Munster through its beautiful 50-acre campus which features Gothic and Hiberno-Romanesque architectural styles. The university received international recognition as the first "Green Flag" campus which demonstrates its dedication to sustainability while maintaining a high ranking among universities that create social value through its research programs.

The institution of higher learning began its operations in 1845 when Queen's College Cork opened as one of three colleges which aimed to increase educational opportunities for Irish students. After opening in 1849 the institution became a vital part of Irish education despite facing challenges during the Great Famine period. The university experienced major changes throughout its history but it reached its most important point when the Irish Universities Act of 1908 transformed it into University College Cork. The institution achieved multiple historic achievements which included becoming the first Irish college to hire a female professor and establishing itself as the academic center for mathematician George Boole who developed the digital field.
