University of Limerick

University of Limerick operates its main campus in Limerick at a research institution which belongs to the public sector of Ireland. The university campus extends across both sides of the River Shannon which runs through the campus while its students and staff members always keep their lively academic environment active throughout the day. The university campus which offers top-notch sports facilities to its visitors has become known as "Ireland's Sporting Campus" because it serves as a research center for both domestic and international projects.

The institution began its operations in 1972 when the National Institute for Higher Education NIHE Limerick opened its doors to provide essential technical and professional training programs which were missing in the local area. The institution achieved a historic milestone when it received university status in 1989 because it became the first university to open in the Republic of Ireland after the nation gained independence in 1922. The institution expanded its territorial boundaries from Plassey House to develop a 137-hectare contemporary campus which includes the Living Bridge that connects the two parts of its campus between County Limerick and County Clare.

Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2026, University of Limerick is positioned as the #401 top university in the world, which makes it the #5 top university in Ireland. The university's global rank is improved by 20 points from last year.
