Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) is a state corporation.

The history of Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) can be traced back to 1934, when it was established as a unit of the then Forest Department. The unit later became a research branch focusing on applied research on forest silviculture, entomology, pathology and wood utilization.

In 1986, the research branch was elevated to the status of a state corporation under the name Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI). This was in recognition of the importance of forestry research in supporting sustainable forest management and development in Kenya.

Since its establishment, KEFRI has played a leading role in forestry research in Kenya and East Africa. The institute has conducted research on a wide range of forestry issues, including forest ecology and management, tree breeding and propagation, forest products and utilization, forest protection and health, and socio-economic aspects of forestry.

KEFRI's research has contributed significantly to the development of the forestry sector in Kenya. For example, KEFRI has developed new tree planting technologies and improved tree varieties that have helped to increase forest cover in the country. KEFRI has also developed new forest products and processing technologies that have added value to the forestry sector.

In addition to its research activities, KEFRI also provides training and consultancy services to the forestry sector and other stakeholders. KEFRI also plays a leading role in public awareness and education on forestry issues.
