University of Nairobi

The University of Nairobi (uonbi or UoN; Swahili: Chuo Kikuu cha Nairobi) is a collegiate research university based in Nairobi, Kenya.

The history of the University of Nairobi (UoN) can be traced back to 1947, when the Kenya colonial government drew up a plan for the establishment of a technical and commercial institute in Nairobi. In 1961, the college was renamed the Royal College Nairobi and became the second university college in East Africa, after Makerere University College in Uganda.

In 1964, the Royal College Nairobi was renamed University College, Nairobi, and began offering degree programs in a wider range of disciplines. The college became an independent university on July 1, 1970, and was renamed the University of Nairobi.
