American University of Technology

American University of Technology is a private, non-profit, and non-sectarian higher education institution based in Lebanon. Nestled on a main campus along the Byblos Highway in Halat, which offers views of the Mediterranean Sea, the university also extends its geographic reach through regional locations such as its Akkar campus in Halba to serve populations in the far north. Operating under an American academic model, the university utilizes English as the primary language of instruction and focuses on active learning strategies designed to cultivate critical thinking, teamwork, and entrepreneurial skills. AUT is fully accredited by the Lebanese Ministry of Education and Higher Education and deliberately positions itself as an accessible institution, providing substantial financial aid to ensure that students from rural villages and varying socioeconomic backgrounds can attain a modern university degree.

The institution was established in 1998 by Mrs. Ghada Hinain under the initial name of the American University College of Technology (AUCT). From its inception, it operated an external degree program in collaboration with Empire State University of the State University of New York, establishing an early precedent for international curricular alignment. The college received its formal operating license from the Lebanese government via Presidential Decree Number 2143 on January 14, 2000. With the advancement of the school’s institutional infrastructure and academic frameworks, it was able to acquire full university status on January 18, 2008, as per Presidential Decree Number 846, allowing it to change its name to the American University of Technology. Over the years, the institution went through different stages of development, which included introducing mandatory human rights courses and expanding its localized campus footprint.
