Saint George University of Beirut

Saint George University of Beirut is an American not-for-profit educational institution offering accredited programs of study with special emphasis on health sciences, medicine, and human sciences. Located in the Achrafieh area of Beirut, Lebanon, the university was founded under the auspices of the Greek Orthodox Archbishopric of Beirut. Working in a direct academic integration with Saint George Hospital University Medical Center, one of the oldest teaching hospitals in the region, Saint George University of Beirut provides up-to-date, community-oriented, ethics-based education.

The history of Saint George University of Beirut starts with that of Saint George Hospital which was originally founded back in 1878 as a community health care center. In order to consolidate a hundred-year-long tradition of medical treatment and education, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Beirut created SGUB in order to have a specialized university environment for their medical center. Having been officially recognized as a university by Presidential Decree of the Lebanese Ministry of Education and Higher Education in 2018, the university promptly formed its faculty of medicine and nursing.

In spite of the fact that there were various collateral problems, including the terrible Beirut Port explosion in 2020 which severely affected the hospital linked to this institution, Saint George University of Beirut managed to reconstruct itself, develop its facilities, and expand its academic endeavors. Today, the institution remains one of the growing centers for the education in medicine, health sciences, and science in Lebanon and the Levant region. The combination of a long-standing heritage of compassionate healthcare provision and the latest advancements in medicine and medical research allows it to train professionals for the challenging global world.
