Tripoli University Institute for Islamic Studies

Tripoli University Institute for Islamic Studies is a private university located in Tripoli, Lebanon and devoted to religious studies, Islamic jurisprudence and Arabic literature. The university is recognized by the Lebanese Ministry of Education and Higher Education and is involved in conducting educational programs on bachelor, masters and doctorate level to educate scholars and community leaders. Its programs incorporate both classical and modern approaches to Islamic studies that contribute to promotion of open cultural dialogue and ethical research and education throughout the region.

The university was founded in 1982 by the Tripoli Islamic Association headed by distinguished Lebanese scholars in response to demand for specialized religious education in Northern Lebanon. Initially, the university operated as an institute offering courses in Sharia and Arabic language and only later increased its faculty body and widened the range of educational programs. In 1996, the institute received official status as a university after getting approval from the Lebanese president through a decree allowing to issue higher educational degrees. Throughout many years of operation, the university formed extensive international network among leading Islamic universities in the Arab world.

To date, Tripoli University Institute of Islamic Studies still retains significance within the Lebanese higher education system as far as the region of Northern Lebanon is concerned. The contribution of this institution in the preservation of Islamic culture and promotion of moderate discourse in religion is made through training students for different vocations including those of research, judicial work, teaching, and community leadership. It strives to develop its academic infrastructure in order to meet international standards of education.
