Radboud University

Radboud University stands as the foremost public research university which operates from its location in Nijmegen, the Netherlands' oldest city. The Catholic University Nijmegen started its operations on October 17, 1923 to help Dutch Roman Catholics achieve their rights because they had faced historical discrimination in government jobs and academic positions. The university experienced major challenges during World War II because its professors faced arrest and classes stopped when Rector Magnificus Hermesdorf refused to work with the occupying army. The institution experienced a time of extensive development and modernization which led to its 2004 name change to Radboud University because the name honored Saint Radboud who was a medieval bishop that supported poor people while studying science.
