Tilburg University serves as a prestigious public research university which operates from its campus in Tilburg, located in the southern region of the Netherlands. The university dedicates its efforts to social and behavioral sciences research which it conducts under the motto "Understanding Society" which serves as its official mission statement. The institution was founded in 1927 as the Roomsch Katholieke Handelshoogeschool (Roman Catholic School of Commerce), established to provide academic education rooted in Catholic values during a time when the southern Netherlands had limited access to higher learning. The school began as an economics institution under his guidance before expanding its curriculum to include humanities studies which would help students build their ethical and social understanding. The institution changed its name multiple times throughout its existence because it transformed from a business school into a research university which ultimately chose its present name in 2001. The institution has operated as a center for educational reform since its founding in 1969 when student protests led to the establishment of democratic processes for university governance in Dutch educational institutions.
