National University of Agriculture

National Agrarian University is a public university in Managua, Nicaragua. Founded in 1917 as the National School of Agriculture, it has evolved into the nation's premier institution for agricultural education and research.

The story begins in 1917, spurred by President Adolfo Díaz's vision for modernizing Nicaraguan agriculture. With guidance from American agricultural specialists, the National School of Agriculture opened its doors, offering practical training in crop production, animal husbandry, and rural development. Despite facing challenges like political instability and limited resources, the school laid the foundation for a future of agricultural progress.

The latter half of the 20th century saw the institution evolve into a fully-fledged university. In 1961, it adopted its current name – the National Agrarian University. This period witnessed the establishment of new faculties, such as Animal Science and Natural Resources and Environment, reflecting the growing complexity of agricultural science. Research activities intensified, focusing on crop breeding, pest control, and sustainable farming practices. UNA became a hub for knowledge dissemination, collaborating with international organizations and local communities to improve agricultural practices across Nicaragua.

Following the Nicaraguan Revolution and subsequent economic restructuring, UNA faced new challenges. Funding limitations and changing government priorities demanded innovative approaches. The university embraced distance learning programs, reaching students in rural areas previously isolated from higher education. UNA also strengthened its focus on community engagement, working with farmers to implement sustainable practices and improve rural livelihoods.
