Universities around large urban cities seem to be popular for international students. NYU and Columbia are both located in New York City, those are generally good options. However, US universities generally handle international applicants in 3 ways.
Some elite, top-level universities (such as Harvard, MIT, Princeton, etc.) are also known to be "need-blind full-need" for out-of-country students, meaning they guarantee that they'll provide grants and scholarships for the stuff your family can't pay for if you get accepted, and that whether you need aid or not won't affect your chances of getting in.
Most other elite universities (like Columbia, Stanford, etc.) are generally "need-aware full-need", so financial aid can affect your chances of getting in, but they'll still cover expenses if you do get accepted.
The third category is "merit-based", meaning they'll award scholarships and whatnot based on your academic grades and achievements, not your financial situation. Public universities and some private schools (like USC or Boston Uni) are part of this category.
Most of the time, "need-blind" universities are better for international students, although the admissions process for these institutions is incredibly competitive.
