Babes-Bolyai University

Babeș-Bolyai University (BBU) is the largest Romanian university.

The history of Babeș-Bolyai University (BBU) can be traced back to the 16th century, when the Jesuit College of Cluj was founded. The college offered courses in grammar, humanities, and philosophy, and it was one of the most prestigious educational institutions in Transylvania.

In 1799, the college was transformed into the Royal Academy of Cluj, and it began to offer university-level courses. In 1872, the academy was renamed the Franz Joseph University of Cluj, and it became one of the leading universities in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

After World War I, the university became part of Romania, and it was renamed the King Ferdinand I University of Cluj. The university continued to grow and develop during the interwar period, and it became one of the most prestigious universities in Romania.

In 1948, the Romanian communist government reorganized the country's education system. As part of this reorganization, the King Ferdinand I University of Cluj was split into two universities: the Romanian-language Victor Babeș University and the Hungarian-language Bolyai University.

In 1959, the two universities were merged to form Babeș-Bolyai University. The new university was named after two prominent scientists from Transylvania: the Romanian bacteriologist Victor Babeș and the Hungarian mathematician János Bolyai.

BBU has continued to grow and develop since its founding in 1959. Today, it is the largest university in Romania, and it is one of the most prestigious universities in the country. BBU offers a wide range of academic programmes at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels, and it has a strong research tradition.
