The Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (UTCN) is a public university located in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
The history of the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (UTCN) can be traced back to the beginning of the 20th century. In 1920, the Industrial College was founded in Cluj-Napoca. This was the first technical college in Romania, and it offered programs in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and chemical engineering.
In 1948, the Industrial College was merged with the Cluj Institute of Mechanics to form the Cluj Polytechnic Institute. The new institute offered a wider range of programs, including civil engineering, architecture, and mining engineering.
The Cluj Polytechnic Institute grew rapidly during the Communist era. By the 1980s, it was the largest technical university in Romania and one of the most prestigious.
After the fall of Communism in 1989, the Cluj Polytechnic Institute was renamed the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca. The university continued to grow and develop during the 1990s and 2000s.
In 2012, UTCN merged with the North University of Baia-Mare to form a larger and more diversified university. The new university retained the name UTCN and has since become one of the leading universities in Romania and Eastern Europe.
Today, UTCN is a major center for engineering, science, and technology education and research.
