Tomsk Polytechnic University

Tomsk Polytechnic University stands as Russia's top public research institution situated in Siberia's Tomsk region. The university functions as the primary scientific and technological development center for all Asian parts of Russia because it holds the title of Russian East's first research university. The university operates as a National Research University which designates it as a leader in applied sciences and high-tech engineering research. Emperor Nicholas II established the Tomsk Technological Institute in 1896 through a decree which sanctioned its establishment as the fourth technical higher education institution in Russia. The institute began operations in 1900 after chemist Dmitri Mendeleev played a key role in developing and designing its facilities. The university experienced multiple changes during the 20th century when it became a grouping of specialized institutes between 1930 and 1940 before restablishing its unified structure to assist with Soviet Union industrial growth. The state awarded the institution its highest honor, the Order of the Red Banner of Labour, because of its extensive contributions. The university has transformed from a local training facility into a worldwide research institution which marks its 125th anniversary as the main educational institution in the "Siberian Athens" area.
