The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is a public research university in Johannesburg, South Africa. It was established in 2005 as a result of the merger of Rand Afrikaans University (RAU), Technikon Witwatersrand, and the Soweto and East Rand campuses of Vista University. RAU was one of the leading Afrikaans-medium universities in South Africa. It was founded in 1904 as the Johannesburg Hogeskool, and was granted university status in 1916.
