National Sun Yat-Sen University

National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) is a public research university located in Sizihwan, Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

The original Sun Yat-sen University was founded in Canton (modern-day Guangzhou) in 1923 by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the founder of the Republic of China. The university was modeled after American universities, and its goal was to train future leaders in China.

After the Chinese Civil War in 1949, the Nationalist government of the Republic of China retreated to Taiwan. The original Sun Yat-sen University was also relocated to Taiwan, and it was renamed the National Sun Yat-sen University.

In 1980, the National Sun Yat-sen University was re-established in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The new university was founded in response to the rapid economic development of Taiwan and the need for a new comprehensive university in the southern part of the country.

When NSYSU was re-established, the university had four departments, two graduate institutes, and 189 students. Over the next few decades, NSYSU grew rapidly

NSYSU is a beautiful campus, located on the coast of the Taiwan Strait. The campus is home to a number of historic buildings, as well as modern teaching and research facilities. NSYSU also has a number of student amenities, including a library, a gym, and a swimming pool.

Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2024, National Sun Yat-Sen University is positioned as the #505 top university in the world, which makes it the #8 top university in Taiwan.
