University of Sharjah operates as a major private national educational institution which provides its services from its location in University City Sharjah United Arab Emirates. His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi the Supreme Council member and Ruler of Sharjah established the university in October 1997 with a mission to create an academic institution that would connect contemporary scientific knowledge with Islamic cultural heritage. The university began its operations with four colleges but experienced rapid development during the next few decades which led to the creation of new campuses in Khorfakkan Kalba and Dhaid for regional educational expansion. The institution achieved its development through essential achievements which included the opening of its dedicated medical and dental facilities and the ongoing development of its extensive library collection. The university reached its Silver Jubilee milestone in 2022 which marked the completion of 25 years since it transformed from a local college into a globally recognized research institution with top academic standing.

Based on the QS World University Rankings of 2026, University of Sharjah is positioned as the #328 top university in the world, which makes it the #4 top university in United Arab Emirates. The university's global rank is improved by 106 points from last year.
