Cardiff University

Cardiff University, located in Wales’ capital city, is an esteemed public research institution and one of the founding members of the Russell Group of universities. The university occupies the attractive civic centre of Cathays Park with its combination of beautiful examples of early 20th century Edwardian architecture and cutting-edge modern buildings. The university has a dynamic, multicultural community and is committed to making a positive social, cultural and economic impact on its regional surrounding area. As one of the UK’s leading research universities, Cardiff University consistently ranks highly in research quality and graduate employability.

On 24 October 1883, Cardiff University was established as the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire by royal charter to provide higher education in the South Wales and Monmouthshire area. In 1893, Cardiff University became one of the founding colleges in the Federal University of Wales; over the next hundred years, the institution underwent a number of important mergers. These included the merger of Cardiff University with the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology, in 1988, and the merger with the University of Wales College of Medicine, in 2004. These mergers built on the university's range of subjects and established a firm foundation for the institution to become an independent university in 2005. As a result, Cardiff University has now gained independence from the University of Wales.
