The history of Coventry University dates back to the middle of the 19th Century through its establishment as the Coventry School of Design in 1843. The establishment of this school was the first step in the evolution of what would become Coventry University, and its purpose was to provide the local community with the necessary skills (both technical and artistic). Over the years, through several different mergers and name changes and with the current name dating back to the time of Lanchester Polytechnic in 1970, Coventry University has maintained close ties to the region's manufacturing and engineering sectors, which it established when it became a polytechnic named after Frederick Lanchester (automotive engineer). Coventry University attained university status from 2000 and beyond as defined by the Further and Higher Education Act 1992.
