Lancaster University

Lancaster University is a highly regarded public research institution located in the North West of England, consistently ranked among the top universities in the United Kingdom. The university operates as one of the few British institutions which uses a collegiate system to create a strong community atmosphere while supporting its international academic programs. The university established its campus on 360 acres of parkland at Bailrigg which lies south of Lancaster's historical city center to support its research mission and worldwide outreach activities. The university campus features "The Spine" walkway system which links all residential colleges and modern research centers and social areas that serve as the central gathering spaces for university activities.

The university was established by Royal Charter in 1964 as part of a wave of "plate glass" universities founded to expand higher education during the 1960s. Its origins were the result of strong local advocacy from the Lancashire County Council, which sought to establish a major center of learning in the region. Initially operating out of temporary buildings in Lancaster city center—such as St Leonard’s House and a former congregational church—the institution began its move to the purpose-built Bailrigg campus in 1967. This era was marked by the leadership of its founding Vice-Chancellor, Charles Carter, and its first Chancellor, HRH Princess Alexandra, who helped shape the university’s distinctive collegiate structure and its early reputation for innovation in both the arts and sciences.
