The university originated in 1843 when the Nottingham Government School of Design opened to help local industries develop during the Industrial Revolution. The school transformed into several organizations throughout the 20th century until it became Nottingham and District Technical College in 1945 before it achieved its final polytechnic status as Trent Polytechnic in 1970. The university system expanded through both teacher training and agricultural college programs during this time of development. The institution reached its pivotal point when the Further Higher Education Act of 1992 granted it university status, which led to its transformation into Nottingham Trent University.
