The University of Hull

The University of Hull functions as a public research institution which operates from its campus in Kingston upon Hull, a city that holds historical significance within the East Riding of Yorkshire region in England. The university campus functions as a self-sufficient educational space because it contains green outdoor areas and buildings which combine traditional red-brick design with contemporary technological structures. The university belongs to the Yorkshire Universities association and operates Hull York Medical School which serves as a joint educational program that establishes the university's role as a scientific and medical research center for the region. The university uses its motto Lampada Ferens which means Bearing the Light to express its mission which has existed for many years to promote scholarship and understanding that benefits all people.

The establishment of University College Hull took place in 1927 when the institution acquired property through monetary donations from local benefactors Thomas Ferens and G. F. Grant. The Duke of York who later became King George VI laid the college's foundation stone. The college began operations the next year with a limited number of staff members and students. The institution functioned as an external college of University of London for multiple decades until it received its Royal Charter in 1954 which established it as the 14th oldest university in England. The campus experienced major growth throughout its history which included the Brynmor Jones Library as its central building where Philip Larkin worked as University Librarian for thirty years.
