The University of York

The University of York stands as a prestigious research university which operates as a college in the historic city of York in England. The institution first started its operations in 1963 when it welcomed its initial group of students who would study at the university under the guidance of its first Vice-Chancellor Lord James of Rusholme. The people of York first requested a university for their city in 1617, but they had to wait until the middle of the 20th century to see their request fulfilled. The university started its operations as one of the "plate glass universities" which the UK government established to create new higher education institutions during the 1960s. The university developed from its initial base at Heslington Hall to establish two main campus locations named West and East while preserving its original architectural style and interdisciplinary research methods.
